Bulldogs Earn 3-1 Victory Over Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team picked up a pivotal Big South Conference victory on Friday evening as the Bulldogs earned a 3-1 decision over league foe Coastal Carolina at Kimbel Arena on the campus of the Chanticleers.

Anna Moore and Cindi Miller paced the Bulldogs offensively with 13 kills and 12 kills, respectively, in helping lead the Blue & White to the four-set victory. Setter Hallie Morse tallied 32 assists directing the Asheville offense while Rachel Wells led the team in digs with 18.

With the victory the Bulldogs improve to 11-9 overall with a 4-3 record in conference play while the Chanticleers fall to 8-16 and 2-6 in the Big South.

Coastal was led offensively by Lian Bernett, who tallied an impressive 20 kills on the night. Erika Lightsey (12) and Katie Martin (11) each posted double digit kills while Martin and Kindra Bailey notched four blocks apiece.

Asheville's Meredith Foster and Moore each recorded two blocks, with Foster collecting two solo blocks.

In the first set the two teams battled to a 15-15 tie, before Asheville went on a 7-1 run. After a CCU timeout the homestanding Chanticleers attempted a comeback, outscoring the Bulldogs 6-2 over the next eight points, but Asheville was able to hold on and earn a 25-22 victory.

The second set saw the Asheville jump out to 19-12 lead before Coastal attempted another rally, but once again the Bulldogs would hold on to earn a 25-23 victory.

In the third set it would be the Chanticleers who would build a lead and have to fight off a late run by the Bulldogs. CCU held a 12-11 lead before going on a 10-4 run to take a commanding 22-15 lead. Asheville would pull to within two points at 22-20, but CCU was able to record the final three points of the set to pick up the 25-20 win.

It would be all Asheville in the fourth and deciding set as the Bulldogs blew out the Chanticleers 25-15. The Bulldogs tallied 14 team kills in that set while hitting for a team average of .342 while committing only one attack error.
