Bulldogs Fall At Big South Tournament

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The No. 4 seeded UNC Asheville Bulldogs fell to the No. 1 seeded Liberty Flames 3-0 on Friday afternoon in the second round of the 2011 Big South Conference Tournament hosted by Charleston Southern.

Liberty hit an impressive .430 clip as a team in the match, earning the 25-17, 25-16, 25-14 victory in straight sets. Asheville ends the season with an overall record of 15-14.

Sophomore middle blocker Meredith Foster led the Bulldogs in kills with 11 while senior outside hitter Cindi Miller tallied 10. The two accounted for 21 of Asheville's 31 kills on the day. Hallie Morse earned 29 assists and Alex Stewart posted eight digs in the match.

Liberty (19-12) advances to the Big South Championship on Sunday with the win.

The Flames were led on offense by Lillie Happel who posted 15 kills. Ansley Gebben and Kendle Rollins each posted nine kills to contribute to the Flames' total of 48 while Jade Craycraft tallied 35 assists in directing the Liberty offense.

Liberty jumped out to an early before the Bulldogs pulled to within two at 11-9. The Flames would slowly pull away to earn the 25-17 win on a kill by Gebben.

Once again the Flames jumped out to an early lead in the second set pushing their lead to 12-7 before Asheville took a timeout. Liberty would then go on a 9-5 run to force the Bulldogs to take their second timeout trailing 21-14. Rollins would end the set on a kill to give the Flames the 25-16 win heading into the break.

It would be all Liberty in the third set as the Flames would win the set 25-14 and the match 3-0 on a block by Loren Thomas and Craycraft.

The Flames will take on the winner of Radford and Winthrop on Sunday afternoon at the Buccaneer Fieldhouse.
