COLUMBIA, S.C. - Akron was able to win a close first set and then hold off a determined UNC Asheville comeback as the Zips defeated the Bulldogs, 3-1 in the Gamecock Invitational Friday afternoon.


Akron won the first set 25-23 as the Zips scored the final two points of the set to take the early lead. They won the second set, 25-17. Asheville roared back to win the third set, 25-20. In the fourth set, Akron held off several Bulldog charges to win, 25-21.


Holly Shelton led Asheville with 12 kills, while freshman Christine Lakatos added 11 kills and eight digs. Rachel Wells sparked the Bulldog defense with 17 digs. Alex Stewart chipped in 12 digs. Freshman setter Katie Davis had 25 assists and eight digs.  


Asheville (0-2) had a tough day hitting as it made 28 attack errors. The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday with two matches. They'll face Temple at 10 a.m., followed by a match with South Carolina at 8 p.m.
