ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville has three players with 12 kills each as the Bulldogs picked up a Big South Conference win Friday night by defeating a stubborn Charleston Southern squad 3-1 at Justice Center. Asheville won the match, 25-20, 25-14, 13-25, 25-19.

The Bulldogs (7-16, 3-4 BSC) ended a two-game losing streak with the league win. Anna Moore, Holly Shelton and freshman Christine Lakatos all had 12 kills for the home team. Rachel Wells had a career-best 25 digs, while setter Katie Davis had 43 assists and 11 digs. Shelton had a double-double with 10 digs, while Moore contributed five blocks on the night. Meredith Foster chipped in nine kills and four blocks.

The Lady Bucs (9-16, 3-5 BSC) were led by a game-high 14 kills from Kayla Klinger. She had a double-double with 12 digs. Meredith Parrott added eight kills and four blocks. Ashley Higgenbothem finished with 12 digs.  Erin LaVenice had six kills and six blocks for the visitors.

"This was a great win against a well-coached Charleston Southern team," commented Asheville coach Frederico Santos. "We let them back in the match, but in the fourth set we did a good job getting key points when we had to have them. I like the way we responded when the match got close late."

Moore had six kills in the opening set as the Bulldogs led from start to finish to win 25-20. Asheville could never put away the Lady Bucs as Klinger had four kills in the first set. The Bulldogs only led 21-19 before going on a late 6-1 run to win 25-20.

The home team was in total command of the second set. Asheville rolled to a 25-14 victory to take a 2-0 lead. Shelton and Foster had five kills for the Blue & White. CSU helped the Bulldog cause with seven hitting errors.

However, the Lady Bucs would dominate the third set and win easily 25-13. CSU would take its first lead of the match at 4-3 on a kill from Klinger. Tied at 4-4, the Lady Bucs would score the next three points to take the lead for good. CSU would hit .367 (13-2-30) in the third set, while the home team hit -.088 (6-9-34). Klinger had five kills in the set. The visitors blocking was very effective as CSU had six blocks.

In the fourth set, Lakatos was the catalyst for the Bulldogs as she had six kills as Asheville built a 16-8 lead. CSU crept back in the match behind Klinger and LaVenice and crept back to 20-18. But Lakatos had two straight kills and kills from Moore and Shelton pushed the margin to 24-18. CSU got a kill to cut the lead to 24-19. But Shelton ended the match with her 12th kill of the night as Asheville picked up its third league win of the season.

UNC Asheville hosts Big South leader Coastal Carolina Saturday night at 6 p.m. in the school's annual Dig Pink Game. All Bulldog fans are encouraged to wear pink to support the fight against breast cancer.  Charleston Southern travels to Gardner-Webb for a 2 p.m. league match.
