CULLOWHEE, N.C. – In their third and final contest of the 2013 Western Carolina Invitational the UNC Asheville volleyball team swept the host Catamounts 3-0 to claim the tournament title, as senior middle blocker Anna Moore earned Most Valuable Player honors for her efforts at the event.
Fellow senior middle blocker Meredith Foster was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Bulldogs, who improve to 3-0 on the young season.
The Blue & White took the first set of the match 26-24, winning the frame on a service ace by libero Rachel Wells. Asheville then won the second set 25-20 with sophomore Christine Lakatos providing the final two kills of the win. The Bulldogs then posted a 25-21 victory in the third set, fighting off a late comeback by the Catamounts to earn the three-set victory.
Lakatos posted 12 kills, Moore tallied 11 and Foster posted 10 to lead the Bulldogs to victory. Lakatos also led the Blue & White in digs with 20, a career high for the sophomore. Setter Katie Davis recorded 39 assists to lead the Asheville offense and Moore provided two service aces.
Foster tallied a season-best five blocks (two solo) to lead the Bulldogs’ net defense.
Western was led offensively by Jordan Timmermann, who tallied a match-best 18 kills. Caitlin Piechota added 11 to the Catamounts’ total, with Cristina Nazario recording 35 assists directing the WCU attack. Piechota also had 19 digs to lead the way for Western.
The Bulldogs will have their home opener on Tuesday evening at Justice Center when they host North Carolina Central for a match set for 7 p.m.
