CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Anna Moore and Christine Lakatos had 14 kills each, but Tennessee was able to withstand a determined UNC Asheville effort as the Lady  Vols posted a 3-1 win over the Bulldogs in the Country Inn & Suites Invitational Friday afternoon. UT won the match 16-25, 25-18, 25-21, 30-28.

Asheville (4-1) dominated the first set and led from start to finish to lead 1-0. UT rebounded to win the next two sets before the teams battled through a wild fourth set.

The Bulldogs trailed for most of the set before going on a late run to grab a 20-17 lead. Asheville would serve for the set three different times but UT scored the final three points to improve its record to 4-1.

“We made some crucial mistakes at some crucial times that you can’t make against a team like Tennessee and expect to win,” commented Asheville coach Frederico Santos. “I thought overall we played very well in three sets and we were a play or two away from winning those sets and the match.

“However, we’re simply looking at these matches to prepare for Big South Conference play,” added Santos. “We’ll learn from this match and it will make us a better team.”

Rachel Wells had a game-high 29 digs, while Lakatos added 11 digs. The Bulldogs were hurt by 12 serving errors.
