CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped their first match of the 2013 College of Charleston Volleyball Classic on Friday afternoon, falling 3-0 to Ball State at TD Arena on the campus of the Cougars.

Ball State took the first set 25-21, followed by a 25-13 win in the second set. The Cardinals then took the third set 25-13, improving to 10-3 on the young season. Asheville falls to 7-5 with the setback.

Senior Anna Moore led the Bulldogs offensively with 10 kills, hitting for a .529 clip in the process. Setter Katie Davis tallied 23 assists directing the Asheville attack while recording 15 digs in the contest. Libero Rachel Wells also posted 15 digs for the Blue & White.

The Bulldogs struggled to get their offense on track in the second and third sets, hitting -.079 in the second and -.047 in the third. Asheville posted a mark of .379 in the opening frame, tallying 14 kills against three errors.

BSU’s Mindy Marx tallied 10 kills, with fellow Cardinals Hayley Benson and Mackenzie Kitchel posting nine kills apiece. Jenna Spadafora recorded 33 assists from the setter position while libero Catie Fredrich earned a match-high 18 digs.

The Cardinals recorded 47 kills as a team.

The Bulldogs will look to get back to their winning ways on Saturday as they will play a pair of matches to close out the CofC Classic. Asheville will take on Alabama A&M at 10 a.m. before finishing the day against host College of Charleston at 2 p.m.
