ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Anna Moore had 13 kills, four blocks and three service aces as UNC Asheville rolled to a 3-0 Big South Conference volleyball victory over visiting Presbyterian College Saturday afternoon at Justice Center. Asheville won the match 25-22, 25-21, 25-16.
With the win, the Bulldogs (12-8, 3-2) matched their win total from last year with 12. It was the home team’s second straight win after slipping past Winthrop Friday night.
The Bulldogs also received a strong march from freshman Shelby Erickson with 12 kills, while Christine Lakatos added 11 kills and nine digs. Rachel Wills had a game-high 21 digs for the Blue & White. Alex Stewart contributed 10 digs.
PC (5-15, 3-2 BSC) was led by Rachel Hall’s 13 kills. Andrea Barman and Kelly Berryman had six kills apiece. Ashtin Frank had four blocks and eight digs. Mary Trimpe had 15 digs for the visitors.
Moore was sensational for the home team. She had 13 kills on 19 attempts and hit .684 for the match. The senior did not make an error. Meredith Foster added six kills on 13 swings and also didn’t commit an error.
“We really played well this afternoon,” commented Bulldog coach Frederico Santos. “Our team had a great win last night against Winthrop but we were ready for a new challenge today against a well-coached Presbyterian College club.
“I thought we had great balance with our hitters,” added Santos. “It’s always good to have three players with double-figures in kills.”
The first two sets were very close with Asheville using a late surge in each set to take a 2-0 lead. In the first set, the match was tied at 20-20 before Moore had two straight kills to lead a 3-0 Asheville run to lead 23-20. The Blue Hose closed to 23-22 before a serving error and a kill from Foster gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, Asheville led 16-15 before Erickson went to work. The freshman outside hitter had three kills to help lead at 4-0 run to put the Bulldogs in front 20-15. The Blue Hose could get no closer than three points the rest of the set as Moore helped keep the visitors at bay with a service ace and a kill.
Asheville quickly took command in the third set. The Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run early to lead to an 8-4 lead behind three kills from Moore. PC would get no closer the rest of the set. The Blue Hose helped the Asheville cause with eight hitting errors and two service errors. Lakatos delivered a kill at match point to give the Bulldogs their 12th win of the season.
UNC Asheville hosts North Carolina A&T Thursday night at 7 p.m. as the Bulldogs will help the fight against breast cancer with their annual Dig Pink match. Presbyterian College travels to Campbell next Friday for a 7 p.m. league match.
