ASHEVILLE, N.C.– UNC Asheville jumped out to 5-0 lead in game one and went on to win 11-3 but its comeback bid in game two fell a run short as Marist took the nightcap 6-5 in NCAA baseball action at McCormick Field on Sunday.
Kevin Weidenbacher went 4-for-6 and Catlin Carter went 4-for-5 for Asheville (8-10) in the opener. The Bulldogs put up a five spot in the first inning and added a run in the second to chase Marist (2-8) starter B.J. Martin after one and two thirds innings.
The Bulldogs added four runs in the fourth highlighted by Elliott Arrington’s second double of the game. Arrington becomes Asheville’s all-time leader in career doubles passing the mark of 52 held by Brian Shehan.
Asheville extended it lead to 11-2 with a RBI single by pinch hitter Billy Enright in the eighth inning to seal the series victory.
Michael Bogaert picked up the win for Asheville to move to 3-1 on the season. He went seven innings allowing two runs on five hits and striking out eight batters.
Marist salvaged one game win the series scoring five runs in two innings and then holding on in the eighth inning.
Asheville jumped out in front with a run in the third inning. Arrington walked and scored on a RBI double by Justin Schumer who had two doubles and single going 3-for-4.
The Red Foxes scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth highlighted by Ryan Gauck’s second home run of the day in the fifth. Gauck had a two run shot in game one. He went 3-for-9 on the day.
The Dogs made it a two run game at 5-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. A double by Danny Baatz and mis-played fly ball put Bulldogs at second and third. A pair of RBI grounds got the runs across.
Marist added an important insurance run in the top of the eighth. Kyle Meyer’s RBI double brought home pinch runner Kyle LaHonta after an error had allowed the lead off man to reach base.
Asheville threatend to take the lead in the bottom of the inning. A single by Kevin Mattison in front of a RBI triple by Beau Zinman made the score 6-4. Zinman would score on a RBI ground out to make it a one run game. A walk, a double, and an intentional walk loaded the bases with one out but Marist reliever Eric Alessio got a ground ball double play to escape the jam.
Alessio pitched the ninth to record the save for winning pitcher Josh Rickards. Tayloe Wohlwend took the loss for Asheville who will travel to USC Upstate on Tuesday, March 18, for a 6 p.m. game.
