BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Tom Smith era for UNC Asheville baseball began with a win on Friday. The Bulldogs pounded out 16 hits en route to a 15-11 victory at Campbell.
Asheville (1-0) rallied from an 8-5 deficit and scored four runs in the seventh inning and three runs in the eighth inning to give the Bulldogs the exciting victory.
The win went to reliever Tyler Coyle (1-0) who pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one run. Taylor Wohlwend pitched the final three innings and earned the save. The junior right-hander silenced the Campbell bats as he allowed just one hit and struck out three.
The Bulldogs broke on top early with three runs in the first inning. Justin Schumer had a run-scoring double for Asheville's first run of the year. Cody Buch followed with a two-run double for a 3-0 Asheville lead.
The visitors made it 7-0 in the fourth inning. Junior Danny Baatz hit his first career grand slam home run to give the Bulldogs the seven-run lead.
Campbell roared back in the fourth and fifth innings. The Fighting Camels exploded for all 11 of their runs in those two innings. They scored five runs on six hits in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-5. Asheville picked up a run in the fifth when Buch scored an unearned run to pad the Bulldog margin to 8-5. The home team finished its comeback in the bottom of the frame with six runs on six hits to lead 11-8.
Asheville took the lead back in the seventh inning with four runs. The Bulldogs took advantage of a Campbell error and passed ball to regain the lead. The visitors also got a clutch RBI-double from Schumer and catcher Ian Graham to lead 12-11.
The Bulldogs picked up some insurance with three runs in the eighth. Robbie McIntosh had a two-run single to push the lead to 14-11. Ian Graham followed with a run-scoring single to make it 15-11.
Graham led the visitors with three hits. Schumer had two doubles, while Catlin Carter, Beau Zinman, Austin Graham, Buch and McIntosh all had two hits each.
The Bulldogs did not make an error in the game, while Campbell had four errors
UNC Asheville and Campbell will play a double-header on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
