ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Graham Sullivan's two-run triple gave #29 VMI a 7-5 Big South Conference victory over UNC Asheville Friday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

Sullivan's two-out blast improved the Keydets' record to 21-5 overall and 5-2 in the league. The Bulldogs fell to 8-15 on the year and 2-5 in BSC play.

Asheville battled back from a 5-1 deficit with two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 5-5. Danny Baatz, Catlin Carter and Justin Schumer all had two hits for the Bulldogs.

Jordan Ballard paced the VMI attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. He hit a two-run homer, his league-leading 12th, in a five-run Keydet third inning. Sullivan added two hits for the visitors.

Reliever John Garrett (2-0) earned the win for VMI, while Michael Devine pitched two scoreless and hitless innings to earn his fourth save of the year. Dan Weller (0-1) was the hard-luck loser for Asheville.

Weller came in to pitch the eighth with the game tied at 5-5 and gave up a single to Jacob Morley. After getting two outs, he walked Ballard to put runners on first and second. Sullivan then sent a Weller pitch to deep center-field that just went over Baatz's glove and landed at the wall. Both Morley and Ballard scored to put the Keydets in front, 7-5.

The Bulldogs trailed 5-1 in the sixth before rallying. Three singles loaded the bases. VMI pitcher Chris Duty then walked Ian Graham to force in a run to cut the lead to 5-2. Beau Zinman then hit a grounder to third that scored another run to make it 5-3. With two outs, Mike Vaughn ended the inning with a deep fly-out to right field.

In the seventh, Asheville knotted the game. Cody Buch was hit by a pitch. Jacob Edwards coaxed a walk off Garrett to put runners on first and second. Carter reached first on a perfect bunt single to load the bases. Baatz's run-scoring single scored Buch to narrow the lead to 5-4. Robert McIntosh grounded into a double-play that scored Edwards to it the game at 5-5. Schumer tried to give the Dogs the lead but lined out to right to end the inning.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the first. Carter singled and then scored on three wild pitches by VMI starter Adam Lopez. Lopez left after the first inning and was replaced by Duty.

VMI used big hits in the third inning to score five times and lead 5-1. Sam Roberts drove in George Picarilli on a groundout for the first run of the inning. Two batters later, Ballard homered over the left-field wall for a 3-1 lead. Later in the inning, Ombri Rivers doubled down the left-field line to give the Keydets a four-run lead.

The Bulldogs and VMI will play a double-header at Asheville's McCormick Field Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
