DURHAM, N.C. – UNC Asheville pounded out 23 hits for 19 runs during a doubleheader baseball sweep (9-3, 10-2) of North Carolina Central University on Saturday inside historic Durham Athletic Park.

Asheville junior Billy Creighton exploded at the plate, going 5-for-8 with three home runs, a double, seven runs batted in and six runs scored in the afternoon twinbill. Junior Ian Graham knocked in five runs with a 2-for-4 performance, including a double, while senior Patrick Koontz belted a home run for the Bulldogs.

NCCU was paced by junior center fielder Nate Smith with three doubles and two runs scored. Junior left fielder Luis Diaz drove in Smith with a two-run home run as part of his 2-for-6 offensive effort on Saturday. Sophomore third baseman Troy Marrow contributed two hits for the Eagles, senior first baseman Etienne Farquharson hit 2-for-4 with an RBI, sophomore catcher Carter Williamson tallied a double and two runs scored, and sophomore right fielder Alex Moore III also doubled.

In game one on Saturday, Asheville scored one run in the second inning, three in the third and four more in the fourth to jump out to an 8-0 lead.

NCCU got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Smith doubled to open the frame and later scored on an error.

The Bulldogs tallied an insurance run in the sixth before Diaz’s two-run blast off the top of the right field fence made the final score 9-3 in favor of the visitors.

Asheville sophomore starting pitcher Dean Roland allowed only one run and scattered three hits with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work to earn the game one victory.

Junior hurler Gavin Guarrera surrendered eight runs, nine hits and three walks in 3.1 innings to take the loss for the Eagles.

In game two, NCCU took its first lead of the season when Williamson scored on a Tyson Simpson, Jr., ground out in the bottom of the second inning.

The Eagles’ starting pitcher Jacob Russell held Asheville scoreless for 3.1 innings, before the Bulldogs plated two runs, one unearned, in the fourth to take a 2-1 advantage.

In the bottom half of the fourth NCCU evened the contest at 2-2 when Farquharson lined a one-out single to center field to score Williamson, who led off the frame with a double.

Asheville responded in a big way in the top of the fifth with Creighton’s towering three-run blast and a solo shot by Koontz to give the Bulldogs a 6-2 cushion.

The visitors tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh for a 10-2 victory.

Junior starting pitcher Drew Spear allowed two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings to garner the win for the Bulldogs.

Russell took the loss for the Eagles, battling for 5.0 innings to allow five earned runs on six hits.

The Bulldogs also swept the weekend series after beating the host Eagles 13-3 on Friday.

The Blue & White will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon when the Bulldogs hit the road to face off against UNC Greensboro. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. NCCU returns to the diamond on Wednesday, Feb. 22 against neighbor Duke University inside historic Durham Athletic Park with first pitch at 4 p.m.
