UNC Asheville Drops Series Finale To CofC, 11-6

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C.  - In the series finale between UNC Asheville and the College of Charleston the Cougars were able the salvage the final game, earning an 11-6 victory over the visiting Bulldogs at Patriots Point on Sunday afternoon.

Asheville falls to 24-25 on the year while CofC improves to 34-17.

Senior third baseman Cody Buch was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bulldogs, with two runs batted in. Fellow upperclassman Jordan Lurie was 3-for-5 from the leadoff position with an RBI, while Ian Graham and Patrick Koontz collected two hits apiece.

Three different Cougars hit home runs in the game, with shortstop Bradley Goodson posting a game-high four RBI. Marty Gantt was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Brandon Murray was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Kyle Owings (3-0) picked up the victory in relief for the Cougars, tossing 2.2 shutout innings and striking out four batters.

Sophomore hurler Brian Connolly was credited with the loss for the Bulldogs, giving up six runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work. With the setback Connolly falls to 5-4 on the season.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead, plating four runs in the bottom of the first. Asheville responded with three runs in the top of the second, scoring on a fielder's choice and singles by Buch and Lurie.

The Bulldogs then took the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring runs on a Buch sacrifice fly and an Eli Miller single to left. After four complete innings the Bulldogs led 5-4.

Charleston would retake the lead in the fifth inning, as Gantt hit a two-run homer down the leftfield line to give the Cougars a 6-5 lead. Goodson then hit a two-run bomb in the sixth to increase CofC's lead to three runs.

The Cougars would post three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a Goodson two-RBI double to give Charleston an 11-5 lead.

Asheville would plate a run in the top of the ninth but could not keep the rally going, as the Cougars would hold out for the five-run victory.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday evening, when they host No. 14 North Carolina at McCormick Field. This will be the second meeting of the season between the two, with the Tar Heels earning a 10-5 decision in Chapel Hill on April 11. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
