JUPITER, Fla. - Former UNC Asheville pitcher Justin Schumer got the start and the win for Israel on Friday in the qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic at Roger Dean Stadium.

Israel defeated Spain 4-2 as Schumer pitched 5.2 innings. He allowed one unearned run, six hits, striking out one and walking one.

The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Israel scored twice to take a 2-0 lead. Spain scored its unearned run off Schumer in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 2-1.

Three relievers from Israel limited Spain to just one more run the rest of the game as Israel pulled out the victory.
