GREENSBORO, N.C. – With one out and two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, UNCG’s Trevor Edwards hit a single to rightfield to drive in the game-winning run, as the Spartans earned a 10-9 victory over UNC Asheville on Wednesday evening.

The Bulldogs took the lead in the top of the eighth, scoring three runs in the frame to go up 9-8. However, Edwards’ base knock in the final inning lifted the Spartans to the one-run, walk-off victory.

With the setback the Blue & White fall to 1-2 on the season, while Greensboro improved to 3-0 overall.

Freshman second baseman Kyle Towles went 2-for-5 at the plate, with two runs batted in. Senior rightfielder Todd Joyner was 2-for-4, with a RBI and a run scored while shortstop Eli Miller was 2-for-6 from the leadoff position, with two runs scored and a RBI.

Starter Tommy Houmard went three and two-thirds, allowing eight runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out four Spartans. Reliever Ethan Steible was credited with the loss, falling to 0-1 on the young season.

Edwards’ game-winning RBI was just one of five he had on the day for the Spartans. Edwards went 3-for-5 at the dish, with five RBI and one run scored. Leadoff batter and rightfielder Christian Wolfe was 3-for-6 in the contest, with three runs scored and two RBI, scoring the game-winning run on Edwards’ single.

Reliever Ryan Clark picked up the victory for UNCG, allowing only one hit and striking out four Bulldogs in two innings of work.

The Bulldogs will be back in action this weekend, when they host Canisius at Greenwood Field. Due to inclement weather expected in the Asheville area, game times are still to be determined.
