CHARLESTON, S.C. – With two outs and a runners on first and third, UNC Asheville senior Todd Joyner scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Bulldogs to a 5-4 victory over the Pitt Panthers at the 2013 Charleston Crab House Shootout hosted by the Citadel on Saturday afternoon at Riley Park.

“It was a great comeback today after yesterday, led by senior leadership,” said Asheville skipper Tom Smith. “Lucas Clarke got his first career start and pitched a really good game, striking out eight batters, and then the relievers struck out eight more. Our guys were determined that they would not take another loss.”

Fellow senior Billy Creighton (1-0) picked up the win in a relief appearance, pitching a scoreless 10th for his first victory of the season.

Tommy Houmard went 4-for-5 at the plate, with two runs batted in and a run scored for the Blue & White. Joyner was 2-for-5 on the day with an RBI and a run scored, while Creighton went 2-for 5 offensively as well.

Clarke, a freshman from Morganton, N.C., got the start for the Bulldogs, who improve to 4-5 on the young season. Clarke pitched four complete innings, allowing one run on one hit with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Pitt falls to 5-3 with the one-run loss.

Asheville took the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring a run on a Houmard single up the middle, only to have the Panthers tie the game in the top of the fourth, scoring on a balk.

The Bulldogs retook the lead in the sixth, with Joyner delivering an RBI-double to left to put Asheville up 2-1. The Panthers would answer once again in the very next inning, tying the game on a solo home run to left-center.

Robert McIntosh put the Bulldogs up 3-2 with a double to right, and then Houmard delivered another RBI-single to give the Bulldogs a two-run advantage heading into the eighth.

Pitt scored a runner in the eighth to pull to within a run, and then scored the tying run on a wild pitch in the ninth.

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Joyner singled to right to reach base, and then reached third on a Creighton single to right. Joyner then scored the game-winner on a wild pitch.

UNC Asheville will close out its weekend in Charleston tomorrow, taking on host Citadel in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Riley Park.
