CHARLOTTE, N.C. – With runners at second and third and the score tied 7-7 in the bottom of the 11th inning, Grant Dunnegan delivered an infield single to drive in the game-winning run for Charlotte, as the 49ers earned an 8-7 victory over UNC Asheville on Sunday afternoon.


The Bulldogs (10-23) took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 11th, but allowed two runs in the bottom of the frame to the 49ers, who improve to 19-12 on the year with the win.


Shortstop Tommy Houmard went 3-for-5 at the plate with four runs batted in and one run scored. Rightfielder Todd Joyner collected three RBI on the day, with Billy Creighton, Ian Graham and Kyle Towles collecting two hits apiece for the Blue & White.


Creighton entered the game in the ninth in relief and was credited with the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season. Dillon Tabar got the start for the Bulldogs and went 4.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.


Ryan Mas (3-1) picked up the win for Charlotte, closing out the top of the 11th with a strikeout and a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded with Bulldogs.


Catcher Brett Lange went 2-for-3 at the plate for the 49ers, driving in three RBI. Third baseman Shane Basen collected two hits and two RBI, while Dunnegan was 1-for-6, driving in the game-winning RBI on his only hit of the contest.


With the victory the 49ers take the series, 2-1.


The Bulldogs took a two-run lead in the top of the first, when Houmard hit a two-run homer to right. Charlotte answered in the bottom of the first, scoring a run on a wild pitch.


Charlotte tied the game in the second, plating a run on a Lang single up the middle. Asheville retook the lead in the fourth on a Joyner sacrifice fly to center, which scored Creighton from third. Houmard drove in another run in the fifth on a single to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead, only to see Charlotte tie the game in the bottom of the frame on a two-RBI double by Basen.


The 49ers took a 5-4 lead in the sixth, and then added another run in the seventh. Asheville responded in the top of the eighth, scoring two runs on a Joyner single up the middle to tie the game at six runs apiece.


Neither team could get a runner across in the ninth or 10th innings.


The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the top of the 11th, and took the lead when Houmard drew a walk on a full count. Charlotte loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame, tying the game on a Lang sacrifice fly. It was then that Dunnegan hit the game-winner, driving in a runner from third.


The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday evening when they host Appalachian State at McCormick Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. between the mountain rivals.
