MIAMI -- Ty Wigginton, who has hurt the Marlins throughout his 12-year career, is now joining Miami.

On Friday night, the Marlins announced they have signed Wigginton to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training. If he makes the club, the 36-year-old would offer plenty of experience at first and third base. And he is a potential right-handed bat off the bench.

Wigginton played at UNC Asheville from 1996-98 and is the first Bulldog to reach the major leagues.

Wigginton appeared in 47 games and batted .158 in 63 plate appearances for the Cardinals last season before he was released in July.

Wigginton broke in with the Mets in 2002, and he also has played for Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Houston, Baltimore, Colorado and Philadelphia.

No matter where he's been, Wigginton has enjoyed success against the Marlins -- posting a career .286 average with 13 homers and 31 RBIs.

Wigginton is a career .261 hitter with 169 home runs and 594 RBIs.

The Marlins are seeking as much power as possible after finishing last in the Majors in runs scored and home runs in 2013.

In December, they signed Casey McGehee to play third base and Garrett Jones to handle first. Wigginton is a candidate to back up both.
