ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville scored five runs in the first inning and made that stand up as the Bulldogs recorded a 9-4 victory over visiting USC Upstate Monday evening.

 

Asheville (12-28) was led at the plate by shortstop Derek Smith. The freshman went 4-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.  Phillp Treadway had three hits and three RBI’s with two runs scored.

 

Bulldog starter Corey Randall (2-4) earned the win by pitching seven strong innings. He scattered five hits, allowed two runs, one earned, striking out five and walking one.

 

In addition, senior second Robert McIntosh had two hits and reach 200 for his career as he became the 11th player in school history to reach 200 career hits.

 

The Bulldogs opened the scoring with five runs in the first. Asheville had six hits in the opening inning.  The home team had six singles and got four RBI’s from four different players in the inning. Another run scored on a passed ball when Eli Miller struck out.

 

Treadway drove in the first run of the game on a run-scoring single. Hunter Bryant followed with a single to plate another run and put the Dogs in front 2-0. Tanner Bush and Smith added RBI-singles later in the inning to help give the Blue & White a 5-0 lead after one inning.

 

USC Upstate (14-28) scored runs in the second and fourth innings to cut the lead to 5-2.

 

The home team added some insurance in the fifth and sixth. Treadway led off the fifth with a double and scored on a Miller sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.

 

In the sixth, Tommy Houmard had a run-scoring single to push the margin to 7-2. Treadway’s run-scoring single plated Houmard for an 8-2 lead.

 

The Spartans rallied with two runs in the eighth on a run-scoring double from Luke Weber and RBI-single from A.J. Mackey. Mackey finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate.

 

Asheville added one more run in the eighth. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out. McIntosh earned his 200th hit in the inning with a single. With the bases loaded, Treadway walked to score the home team’s final run of the game.

 

UNC Asheville is home again on Tuesday when the Bulldogs host Furman at Greenwood Field starting at 6 p.m
