The UNC Asheville Bulldogs play their final home game before exams tonight when they host the Furman Paladins at Greenwood Field starting at 6 p.m.

Asheville (12-28) broke a six-game losing streak on Monday with a 9-4 win over USC Upstate. The Bulldogs pounded out 15 hits in the victory. Freshman shortstop Derek Smith led Asheville with four hits, while Phillip Treadway drove in three runs on three hits.

Tom Smith’s club looks for a season-sweep of the Paladins (15-23). Asheville slipped past Furman back on March 18 in Greenville, 7-6. The Dogs trailed 6-2 but roared back to score the final five runs of the game to earn their first one-run victory of the season.

Asheville hits the road after tonight for its next five games. Coupled with exams, the Bulldogs will not play at Greenwood Field again until May 9th when they host Big South rival Radford at 5 p.m.  The Blue & White are on the road this weekend at Big South-leader and 30th-ranked Liberty.

“It was good to get the bats going Monday against USC Upstate,” commented Smith. “Furman’s a good ballclub and then we’ve got a tough weekend facing us up at Liberty. We’re just trying to take one game at a time.”

Freshman Tanner Bush continues to lead the Bulldogs in hitting with a .350 average. Senior right-hander Ethan Steible (0-4, 4.60 ERA) will get the nod this evening.
