ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville baseball team finishes up the regular season this weekend with a crucial Big South Conference series against Presbyterian College at McCormick Field starting on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. Friday's game will be played at 3 p.m. and the finale against the Blue Hose will be Saturday at 1 p.m. All of the games will be video-streamed and can be seen at www.uncabulldogs.com.

Asheville (15-34, 7-17 BSC) is in ninth place in the Big South Conference standings, one game behind High Point (23-29, 8-16 BSC). The top eight teams will be in next week's BSC Tournament at VMI. The Bulldogs need to win one more game than the Panthers do this weekend to get to at least a tie. If Asheville and High Point finish in a tie, the Bulldogs own the tie-breaker due to a series win last month.

However, Tom Smith's club is stuck in a 13-game losing streak. Asheville played hard on Tuesday before falling at #3 South Carolina, 9-5 in a game that was televised regionally.

"We're going to need to play well this weekend against an improved Presbyterian College team," stated Smith. "Right now we need to worry about ourselves. We need to win a game and then we'll worry about what happens to High Point at VMI.

"Our guys' just need to put nine innings together," added Smith. "We play well for parts of the game but have a bad inning and the game gets away from us."

The Blue Hose is in 10th place in the league with a 21-32 overall record and 6-18 BSC record. They are not eligible for the BSC Tournament yet. Asheville swept a three-game series at PC last year but all of the games were close.

"Presbyterian College has beaten Clemson this year and is much improved," commented Smith. "I'm sure they want to finish in front of us, so they have a lot to play for this weekend."

BULLDOG NOTES

UNC Asheville has lost 13 straight games. The Bulldogs have not won since a 7-4 victory over High Point on April 17 at Greenwood Field.

Asheville has played just 15 home games this year and is 8-7 at home.

Junior second baseman Jordan Lurie leads the Bulldogs in hitting with a .338 average. He tops the club in hits (70), total bases (85) and runs scored (29). Lurie is also tied for the team lead in stolen bases with 13.

Senior outfielder Mike Vaughn has a six-game hitting streak entering this weekend's action.

Asheville leads the series against the Blue Hose with a 6-3 mark.

The Bulldogs have 54 stolen bases this year compared to 23 last season.
