ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Chase Shelton went 4-for-5 with two RBI’s to lead Charleston Southern to a 9-1 Big South Conference victory over UNC Asheville Thursday night.


The Buccaneers (20-20, 5-11 BSC) were led by starting pitcher, Troy Schroff and reliever Austin Weekley. Schroff (3-3) pitched 7.2 innings, scattering six hits, walking three and striking out two. Weekley got the final four outs, pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the eight, to record his eighth save of the year, tying  a school record.


Cody Austin, Bobby Ison and Alex Tomasovich all had two hits for CSU. Tomasovich and Austin drove in two runs each.  The Bucs scored all of their runs with two outs.


The Bulldogs (11-27, 4-12 BSC) had seven hits in the game. Tanner Bush had his third triple of the year. Kyle Towles and Hunter Bryant all had doubles for the Blue & White.


Charleston Southern used two-out lightning to score three times in the first inning. Tomasovich doubled down the right-field line. Shelton then doubled down the left-field scoring Tomasovich for the first run of the game. Both drives landed just fair on each line.


Zack Hagaman walked to put runners on first and second. Cody Austin singled up the middle to score Shelton and Hagaman scored on an error in center-field to pad the lead to 3-0.


Asheville picked up a run in the bottom of the first.  Bush led off with a triple that landed just fair inside the right-field line. Treadway hit a sacrifice fly two batters later to narrow the lead to 3-1.


CSU added a run in the third. Shelton had a one-out single. He moved to second on a ground-out.  Austin delivered a run-scoring single to push the margin to 4-1.


Asheville threatened in the bottom of the eighth as it loaded the bases with two walks and a single. But Weakley was able to get a ground-out to end the threat.


It stayed 4-1 until the top of the ninth inning when the visitors broke the game open with five runs. Tomasovich had a two-run single with Shelton added a run-scoring single as well. Nick Berry and Austin also had RBI-singles.  All the runs were unearned.


The teams will continue their three-game Big South Conference series Friday night at 7 p.m. Friday’s game will be broadcast by ESPN3.
