MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - Pitcher Dean Roland struck out nine College of Charleston batters over eight innings of work to help lead UNC Asheville to a 4-2 victory over the Cougars at Patriots Point on Friday evening.
With the victory the Bulldogs improve to 23-24 on the year while CofC drops to 33-16.
Catcher Ian Graham went 3-for-3 for the Blue & White, highlighted by a two-run double in the fourth. Outfielder Patrick Koontz hit is eighth home run of the year, while reliever Dillon Tabar picked up his first save of the season.
CofC's Bradley Goodson went 2-for-3 at the plate, with Daniel Alrich driving in an RBI for the Cougars.
Roland (5-4) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over eight innings, with nine K's and a pair of walks. Tabar tossed one shutout inning, with a pair of strikeouts.
Christian Powell (8-3) was credited with the loss for the Cougars, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits with five K's.
Asheville jumped out to an early lead when Koontz hit a solo homer to left, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. The Bulldogs then added three runs in the top of the fourth to go up 4-0, with Graham's double to right plating Todd Joyner and Hunter Bryant.
After gaining the four-run lead, Roland retired 11 consecutive batters. The Cougars eventually rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead in half, but the Bulldogs would stop CofC's momentum and would take a 4-2 lead into the ninth.
Tabar gave up a single to the first batter he faced in the ninth, but then retired the next three to end the game.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow, with first pitch set for 7 p.m.
