GWU starter Andrew Barnett (4-3) went the first five innings and allowed one run and seven hits. Relievers Mitch Warner and Jimmy Moore pitched the final four innings and did not give up a hit. Warner entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the sixth inning. He struck out the first two hitters and then got a fly out to end the inning and Asheville's last good scoring opportunity.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (29-25, 11-11 BSC) were led at the plate by Scott Coleman who went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Dusty Quattlebaum was one of four Gardner-Webb hitters that had two hits. He also had two RBI.
Asheville was led by Billy Creighton with two hits. The Bulldogs were hit by pitches five different times but just could not get a big hit when needed.
GWU opened the scoring in the third inning when Quattlebaum had a run-scoring single that plated Coleman for a 1-0 visitor lead.
The Bulldogs (24-27, 11-11 BSC) answered back in the bottom of the frame when Creighton singled in Jordan Lurie to knot the game at 1-1.
GWU took the lead for good in the fifth inning when it scored three runs to lead 4-1. Ryan Hodge coaxed a one-out walk off Asheville starter Dean Roland (5-5). He went o third on a single from John Harris. A Roland wild pitch scored Hodge for a 2-1 Runnin' Bulldog lead. Two batters later, Quattlebaum had his second RBI with a run-scoring single to make it 3-1. Adam McFarland finished the uprising with a single to score Quattlebaum and increase the margin to 4-1.
The Bulldogs threatened in the sixth and knocked out Barnett. Asheville used two singles and a walk to load the bases with nobody out. However, Warner came on and got the next three Bulldogs out to stop the rally.
GWU added insurance in the eighth with three runs. The Runnin' Bulldog took advantage of three Asheville errors in the inning. Zach Blanton had a run-scoring double that scored one run, another came in on an error and the final on a double-steal when Blanton scored from third.
Warner went three innings and had four strikeouts.
The teams will play the second of their three-game series Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
