ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team returns to the diamond on Wednesday evening when the Bulldogs travel to ETSU for a non-conference battle starting at 7 p.m.

Asheville (15-30) has been off for the past 10 days due to exams. The Bulldogs have not played since a 5-1 loss at Gardner-Webb on April 27th. Later this week, Tom Smith’s club heads to Coastal Carolina for a three-game Big South Conference series in Myrtle Beach this weekend against the defending league champions.

“We’re looking forward to playing again after exams,” commented Smith. “We’ve got some tough games coming this week. ETSU has a good ballclub, and Coastal Carolina just got through winning a series at Georgia Tech.”

The Bulldogs fell at home to the Buccaneers earlier this year 20-9 on March 13. Freshman left-hander Lucas Clarke gets the call for Asheville on Wednesday. He’s 2-3 on the season with a 4.31 ERA this year.

ETSU leads the all-time series between the teams 28-20. The Buccaneers have really controlled the series the past few years as they’ve won 14 of the last 16 meetings.

Todd Joyner is Asheville’s leading hitter coming into Wednesday’s action. He has a .328 average and carries a 13-game hitting streak into tomorrow’s game. Shortstop Tommy Houmard is right behind at .325.  He has reached base in 27 straight games.
