ASHEVILLE, N.C. –Tennessee Tech pounded out 15 hits and scored 15 runs as the Golden Eagles broke open a close game with a 15-6 victory over homestanding UNC Asheville Tuesday afternoon.

 

TTU (14-3) trailed 5-4 after five innings but the visitors scored 10 runs over the next four innings to pick up the road victory.

 

Asheville (3-11) had 14 hits in the game but was hurt by four errors, 10 walks and four hit batters.

 

Jake Rowland and Zach Zarzour led the Golden Eagles with three hits each. Anthony El Chibani had two hits and three RBI’s.

 

The Bulldogs were led at the plate by freshman shortstop Derek Smith. He went 3-for-4 and drove in one run. Kyle Towles added two hits and scored a run as he had a double and triple. Tommy Houmard, Hunter Bryant and Phillip Treadway all had two hits each.

 

Asheville trailed 4-1 in the third inning but scored the next four runs to take a 5-4 lead. Bryant’s RBI-single in the third cut the lead to 4-2. However, the Bulldogs had the bases loaded and nobody out but reliever and eventual winner Cain Sloan got two pop-outs and a ground-out to limit the Dogs to just one run.

 

In the Asheville fourth, Towles led off with a double and scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Smith to cut the lead to 4-3.

 

The Bulldogs took the lead in the fifth as Sam Turner had a clutch two-out, two-run single to push Asheville in front 5-4.

 

The visitors regained the lead in the sixth as Jake Rowland’s RBI-single knotted the contest at 5-5 with a double-play ball scoring the go-ahead run as Smith made a great play at shortstop off the bat of Zach Stephens.

 

Tennessee Tech added four runs in the seventh. The Golden Eagles had four hits and took advantage of two Asheville errors to pad the lead to 10-5.

 

The Bulldogs scored their final run in the seventh on a double-play ball.

 

The Golden Eagles sealed the win with five runs in the final two innings.

 

UNC Asheville hosts East Tennessee State Wednesday at 3 p.m.
