ASHEVILE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team begins a five-game road trip tonight when the Bulldogs travel to USC Upstate for a 6 p.m. battle with the Spartans at Harley Park.
Asheville (7-15, 2-4 BSC) looks to build on the momentum of last week’s play. The Bulldogs won three of four, including winning a league series at home against Gardner-Webb this past weekend. Tom Smith’s team was one out away from sweeping the Runnin’ Bulldogs in Saturday’s first game before falling 7-6. Asheville won the second game and the series, 5-1.
“I really liked the way we played last week,” declared Smith. “We fell behind in three of those games and came back to win two of them. Our guys had a tough loss in Saturday’s first game but bounced right back to win the game and the series. Now, our job is to keep it rolling and to keep winning.
“We’ve got a tough week in front of us with five games on the road,” added Smith. “Our guys just need to keep battling and grinding.”
The Bulldogs play at Charlotte on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. before going to Winthrop for a three-game Big South Conference weekend series starting on Friday.
Lucas Clarke (0-1, 6.97 ERA) is scheduled to get the start for Asheville this evening.
Senior outfielder Phillip Treadway leads the Bulldog attack with a .329 average. Pete Guy tops the team in home runs (3) and tied for the team in RBI’s (12) with Robert McIntosh.
Treadway enters tonight’s action with a 14-game hitting streak. McIntosh was 6-for-9 in Saturday’s double-header with two doubles, one RBI and three runs scored.
This will be the first meeting of the year between USC Upstate and Asheville. The Bulldogs are looking for their first ever win in Spartanburg against the Spartans as Asheville is 0-8 all-time here dating back to when the school was USC Spartanburg.
USC Upstate is 12-5 all-time against the Bulldogs with each team winning a home game in 2013.
