ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team hits the road this weekend for a Big South Conference series at South Division rival Winthrop. Action begins Saturday at 2:30 p.m., followed by a double-header Sunday at 1 p.m.
Sunday’s game is scheduled to be video-streamed, and fans can watch the game for free on the Big South Digital Network under the multimedia page at uncabulldogs.com.
The Bulldogs (8-16, 2-4 BSC) have won four of their last six games with three of those wins coming by one run.
Asheville faces a red-hot Winthrop (12-14, 4-2 BSC) squad that has won its first two BSC series on the road and won at #13 UNC Chapel Hill on Wednesday, 3-1.
“We’ve done a good job the past few games, but we need to keep at going at Winthrop,” commented Bulldog coach Tom Smith. “We’re going to face a Winthrop team that’s playing good baseball right now. They won a series on the road at Coastal Carolina last weekend and just beat North Carolina. We’ll need to play our best.”
Freshman right-hander Joe Zayatz (1-3, 4.76 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday’s game with right-handers’ Ethan Steible (0-2, 3.65) and Dean Roland (2-2, 6.41 ERA) scheduled to start on Sunday.
Senior outfielder Phillip Treadway continues to lead Asheville in hitting with a .311 average. He had a 14-game hitting streak snapped on Wednesday at Charlotte. Junior first baseman Hunter Bryant brings a seven-game hitting streak into this weekend’s action.
Senior third baseman Robert McIntosh has been red hot at the plate the past two weeks. He has raised his average almost 100 points over the past seven games. McIntosh is hitting .286 and is 11-of-18 (.611) from the plate. He’s had at least two hits in 10 of the last 12 contests.
After this weekend’s action, the Bulldogs play at mountain rival Western Carolina before coming home to embark on a six-game homestand starting Wednesday vs. Wofford.
