Baseball Drops Midweek Game To WCU, 4-1

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Playing in their first of five games this week the UNC Asheville baseball team dropped a midweek matchup with mountain rival Western Carolina on Tuesday evening, falling 4-1 to the Catamounts at Hennon Stadium.


With the victory WCU improves to 17-9 while Asheville falls to 9-19 on the season.


The Bulldogs got a run in the top of the first after loading the bases followed by a walk by leftfielder Eli Miller to give Asheville a 1-0 lead. Western responded in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs, scoring with the bases loaded on a hit by pitch and a walk to go up 2-1.


The Catamounts added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth when Taylor Sandefur singled up the middle to put WCU up 4-1.


Pitcher Nick Schavone (1-2) was credited with the loss in a relief appearance, allowing two runs in one inning of work. Western’s Bryan Sammons (5-1) got the start and pitched 7.2 innings to earn the win. Sammons allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts.


Tyler Powell was credited with the save for the Catamounts, tossing 1.1 shutout innings.


Catcher Pete Guy went 2-for-3 at the plate with fellow Bulldog Tommy Houmard going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Guy and Houmard combined for four of Asheville’s five hits on the evening.


The Bulldogs will have a quick turnaround for the next contest, hosting Southern Conference foe Wofford on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. at Greenwood Field.
