ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Charleston Southern third baseman Alex Tomasovich had three hits and made some big plays at the hot corner as the Buccaneers rallied for a 6-3 Big South Conference win over homestanding UNC Asheville Friday night.

CSU (21-20, 6-11 BSC) trailed 3-2 entering the seventh inning but scored three times to take the lead for good as the Buccaneers clinched the weekend series against the Bulldogs (11-28, 4-13 BSC).

Eli Miller led Asheville at the plate with two hits and a run-scoring double. The Bulldogs plated three runs in the first inning, but CSU starter and winner Levi Mauldin (4-2) settled down after that and did not allow another run. He pitched 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts and two walks. Buccaneer relievers Jordan Smith and Joe Pistacchio combined to retire the final eight hitters of the game. Pistacchio earned his second save of the year.

The Buccaneers struck for three runs in the seventh inning to take the lead for good. Trailing 3-2 with one out, Asheville starter Joe Zayatz (1-6) hit Sam Remick and Kevin Hickey to put runners on first and second.

Bobby Ison's run-scoring single tied the game at 3-3 with both runners moving up on the throw to the place to second and third. Andrew Widdell's sacrifice fly pushed CSU in front, 4-3.  Tomasovich's run-scoring double padded the lead to 5-3.

The visitors added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI-single from Sam Remick.

CSU opened the scoring in the first inning. Widdell reached on a one-out single. One out later, Shelton doubled into right-field, scoring the first run of game for a 1-0 CSU lead.

The Bulldogs rallied in the bottom of the first. Tanner Bush was hit by a pitch to open the frame. Robert McIntosh walked to put runners on first and second. Tommy Houmard doubled to left-center, scoring Bush to knot the game at 1-1. One out later, Hunter Bryant's RBI-groundout pushed the Dogs in front, 2-1. Miller completed the uprising with a run-scoring double to center field for a 3-1 Asheville advantage.

The Bucs picked up a run in the second. With the bases loaded and one out, Bobby Ison's sacrifice fly cut the lead to 3-2.

Tomasovich went 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. He made several great plays at third base to steal away Bulldog hits.

It was another frustrating league loss for Asheville. The Dogs have now lost eight league games when they’ve led in the seventh inning.

The teams play the final game of their three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m.
