ASHEVILLE, N.C. UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone has announced today that head baseball coach Willie Stewart is resigning effective June 12.

“We are very appreciative of the hard work that Willie Stewart has put into our baseball program the past five years,” stated Cone. “We wish Willie nothing but the best in his future endeavors.”

Stewart has served as the head coach of the Bulldogs for the past five years (2005-2009). He has led the UNC Asheville program to a 94-182 overall record during his tenure. Stewart guided the Bulldogs to a school-record 28 wins in the 2006 season when they captured the Big South Conference Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.  UNC Asheville finished this past season with a 9-42 overall record and 10th-place finish in the Big South Conference.

“My family and I have decided to pursue other opportunities at this point of my career,” commented Stewart. “I appreciate the opportunity to lead my alma mater on the baseball field the past five years and hope the program can build on what our staff and players have done during my tenure.”

Cone is attending Big South Conference Spring Meetings in Rock Hill, S.C. starting on Wednesday and will begin the search process next week.
