ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Jeremy Atkinson scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds as UNC Asheville edged Big South rival Coastal Carolina 63-60 at Kimmel Arena Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs (10-10, 4-2 BSC) also got 13 points from Keith Hornsby, 12 points from freshman Will Weeks and 10 from Trent Meyer.

Coastal Carolina (8-9, 3-3 BSC) was led by Anthony Raffa's game-high 27 points. Warren Gillis contributed 11 points.

Hornsby scored with 3:54 left on a jumper to give the Bulldogs a 63-56 lead. Asheville would not score again but would hold on for the win.

Raffa hit a 3-pointer and CCU got a free throw from Gillis at the 2:09 mark to cut the Bulldog lead to 63-60. Asheville would miss three lay-ups in the final two minutes but played great defense to hang on for the league win.

CCU's final chance to tie the game came with five seconds left when Kierre Greenwood tried to get open for a three-pointer but his shot was well short. Atkinson came down with his ninth rebound of the game with 1.8 seconds left as the Bulldogs won their 11th straight BSC home game.

The game was close all the way as there were 10 ties and nine lead changes. Asheville went on an 8-1 run late in the first half behind six points from Weeks to build a 36-29 lead.

Raffa had 20 points in the first half and helped lead a late CCU run as the Bulldogs led 37-36 at halftime.

In the second half, the Bulldogs went on a 10-4 run midway through to take the lead for good at 55-50. Five different Asheville players scored during the run.

The home team could never get the lead by more than five points, but the Chanticleers could get no closer than three points the rest of the way.

D.J. Cunningham led Asheville's efforts on the boards with 11 rebounds. Atkinson added four assists and two steals.

Hornsby went 4-of-4 from the free throw line and has now connected on a school-record 45 straight free throws. He is the nation's leading free throw shooter at .968 (61-of-63).

Asheville went 17-of-24 from the free throw line for .708, while the Chanticleers were just 6-of-8 for .750.

UNC Asheville finishes its three-game Big South Conference homestand on Saturday against High Point at 2 p.m. Coastal Carolina hosts Campbell Saturday afternoon at 7 p.m.
