ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's basketball team plays its only exhibition game on Monday night at Kimmel Arena when the Bulldogs host Brevard College at 7 p.m.
Monday's exhibition tilt will be video-streamed under the multimedia tag at www.uncabulldogs.com. Tickets can be obtained at uncabulldogs.com or by calling 828-258-7900.
Asheville has been working hard since the start of practice three weeks ago. The Bulldogs are anxious to play a game now as they prepare for their home opener against Western Carolina on Nov. 9.
"We've got a long way to go before we can be the team we want to be but there have been some positive signs," admitted veteran head coach Eddie Biedenbach. "Brevard will be a good test for us under game conditions."
Asheville played Brevard during the regular season and won handily, 89-48. However, the last time the teams played in exhibition action came prior to the 2009-10 season, and the Tornados stunned the Bulldogs, 73-69.
"We remember what Brevard did to us a few years ago," said Biedenbach. "We weren't ready to play, and they beat us soundly. Our guys better be ready to play for 40 minutes Monday night."
Asheville returns just one starter from last year's 24-10 Big South Championship-winning squad in senior forward Jeremy Atkinson. Atkinson is a second-team preseason All-Conference selection. He averaged 11.7 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game.
However, the Bulldog does return 6-11 red-shirt junior center D.J. Cunningham. He missed last season due to a knee injury but should be ready to go in 2012-13. Cunningham averaged 8.6 points and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game two seasons ago.
"We have some size that we didn't have last year with D.J. back," said Biedenbach. "We're anxious to see how he does after missing last season."
