ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville placed three players in double figures as the Bulldogs rolled to a 79-61 Big South Conference win over visiting Radford Saturday afternoon at Kimmel Arena.


Asheville (8-9, 2-1 BSC) was led by senior forward Jon Nwannunu with 19 points and eight rebounds. Jeremy Atkinson chipped in 18 points and eight rebounds. Keith Hornsby finished with 13 points and five assists. Trent Meyer came off the bench to score nine points on three 3-pointers. D.J. Cunningham had 12 rebounds and a career-high seven rebounds.


The Highlanders (7-10, 1-2 BSC) were led by Ya Ya Anderson with 15 points. Javonte Green added 13 points and seven rebounds. R.J. Price finished with 10 points.


"We played pretty good basketball today," commented Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. "I thought out defense did a good job for the most part. We gave up too many offensive rebounds but we battled through that and had a great team effort from start to finish.

"Radford is a good young basketball team that is well-coached," added Biedenbach.


The Bulldogs took charge of the game in the final eight minutes of the first half. Leading 20-18, Asheville outscored the Highlanders 22-11 the rest of the half. Atkinson had seven points during the run, while Meyer knocked down two long 3-pointers. Cunningham had three of his blocked shots to ignite several Bulldog fast breaks.


Asheville led 42-29 at halftime as the Bulldogs got points from everyone who played in the opening half. Atkinson led the Dogs with 10 points, while Nwannunu added nine points. The Bulldogs shot a season-high .615 (16-of-26) from the field and was a perfect 3-of-3 from long distance.


RU was led by Green with 11 points and five rebounds. Anderson chipped in 10 points. The visitors had 11 offensive rebounds in the opening half and had 10 second-chance points.


The Bulldogs kept the pressure up in the second half. Asheville outscored the Highlanders 10-3 to start the second half as Atkinson scored six points to increase the lead to 52-32.


The home team built the lead to lead to 27 at 72-45 with six minutes left on an Nwannunu jumper. Both teams emptied their benches as Radford carved into the final margin.


Asheville shot .536 (30-of-56) from the field for the game and had 20 assists on 30 baskets. The Bulldogs defense limited RU to .292 shooting percentage (21-of-72) from the field.  


UNC Asheville is in action at preseason Big South Conference favorite Charleston Southern this Wednesday evening starting at 7:30 p.m. Radford hosts league newcomer Longwood at 7 p.m.
