ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Andrew Rowsey scored 24 points as UNC Asheville roared past Campbell 86-73 in Big South Conference action Wednesday night at Kimmel Arena.


The Bulldogs (12-11, 6-3 BSC) also got 17 points from Jaron Lane and 16 from D.J. Cunningham. The duo combined for 29 points in the second half as Asheville broke away from the Camels (11-13, 5-4 BSC) in the second half. Corey Littlejohn chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench.


Campbell was led by forward Rico McCarter with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Ryan added 12 points, while Darius Leonard and Kyre Hamer chipped in 10 points each. Leek Leek had a career-high six blocked shots.


Asheville’s defense forced Campbell into a season-high 19 turnovers. The Bulldogs had a season-high 12 steals and turned the game around after the Camels controlled much of the first half.


The Bulldogs led 58-53 with nine minutes left before embarking on a 11-0 to seize control of the game as they built a 69-53 advantage. Cunningham and Lane combined for all 11 points in the run as the two seniors scored inside to build the lead. Lane’s fast-break bucket gave the home team a 16-point lead at the 4:39 mark.


The Camels forced several Bulldog turnovers in the final four minutes to close to 10. But Rowsey went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe as Asheville improved to 20-4 against BSC teams at Kimmel Arena.  The victory was the Bulldogs’ 11th in their last 15 games.


Asheville shot 63 percent (17-of-27) from the field in the second half and forced nine Camel turnovers. Rowsey was 10-of-10 from the free throw line. McCarter kept CU in the game most of the way with 19 points in the second half.


Campbell controlled much of the first half and built a 27-20 lead on two free throws from McCarter at the 4:08 mark. But the Bulldogs rallied in the final four minutes and outscored the visitors, 12-4 to take a 32-31 halftime lead. Rowsey scored a lay-up as the buzzer sounded to give Asheville its first lead since early in the contest.


UNC Asheville is back in action at home Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs host defending Big South Conference champion Liberty at 2 p.m. Saturday’s game will be televised by WMYA-TV.


Campbell travels to Winthrop for a 4 p.m. BSC battle in a game that will be on ESPN3.



Andrew Rowsey has scored in double figures in Big South-leading 20 straight games…Rowsey has hit 29 straight free throws…the Bulldogs have led at halftime in all nine home games this season and are 7-2 at Kimmel Arena this year…Asheville won despite being out-rebounded 33-31 and it marks just the fourth time this season the Bulldogs have won when being out-rebounded…Rowsey is 26-of-48 from the field in the last three games and has averaged 30.1 points per game in those contests.
