ROCK HILL. S.C. – Winthrop outscored UNC Asheville 13-6 in overtime as the Eagles slipped past the Bulldogs 107-100 in Big South Conference action at the Winthrop Coliseum Wednesday night.
Asheville (15-14, 9-6 BSC) led 94-85 with one minute left in regulation only to see the Eagles hit three long 3-pointers in the final minute to tie the game and send the contest into overtime at 94-94.
The Bulldogs were led by Andrew Rowsey’s 37 points. He went 8-of-13 from beyond the arc and became the school’s all-time three-point single-season leader and now has 95 treys. His eight treys tied a single-season school record.
“This is a tough one to take,” stated Asheville coach Nick McDevitt. “We were in position to win the game but had some turnovers late in regulation that hurt us. Give Winthrop credit. They made some big shots and made some big plays.”
UNC Asheville finishes the regular season at home against Gardner-Webb at Kimmel Arena starting at 4:30 p.m.
