Former UNC Asheville men's basketball great John Williams has been hired to coach the Asheville Christian Academy girls basketball team, the school announced Monday.

Williams ranks second among Bulldogs players in all-time blocked shots (255) and also amassed 1,171 career points and 684 rebounds. He led Asheville to a Big South Conference championship and NCAA tournament berth as a senior in 2011. The former Bulldog forward made the Big South All-Tournament team in 2011 with six blocks against Coastal Carolina in the title game.

He was also selected to the Slam-Dunk contest at the Final Four in Houston in 2011 and finished runner-up despite being the only contestant to not miss a dunk.

Williams was formerly with the Harlem Globetrotters, but said he has retired after three years.

Williams replaces Dottie Edwards, who resigned in March after 10 seasons.

Edwards compiled a 161-97 record during that time with back-to-back Carolinas Athletic Association regular-season and tournament championships in 2006 and 2007.

The Lions qualified for the NCISAA playoffs every season under Edwards and were the 2-A state runner-up to Carolina Day in 2013.
