CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) – UNC Asheville’s Shonese Jones has been named the Big South Conference Women’s Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week, while Shatia Cole from Coastal Carolina was tabbed The Crons Brand Freshman of the Week for games played Dec. 13-19, the League announced today.
Jones, a freshman from Etowah, N.C., averaged 25 points per game and shot 68 percent from the floor in two games for UNC Asheville last week. She got her week started with 20 points on 57 percent from the field, a pair from downtown and two from the line against Kennesaw State on Dec. 17. She also chipped in four rebounds and a pair of assists against the Owls. Two days later against South Carolina State, Jones connected on 9-of-11 shots from the floor for an 82 percent clip and added 4-of-4 from long range and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe to finish with 30 points against the Bulldogs. The guard also collected three boards, four steals and one assist for the Blue and White. The honor is her first Player of the Week nod this season.
Cole, a guard from Myrtle Beach, S.C., put in 13 points and dished out five helpers for Coastal Carolina against South Carolina State. She connected on 67 percent of her shots from the floor, including one from three-point land. Cole pulled down one board and came away with three steals in the narrow 61-59 loss. The award marks her second Freshman of the Week plaudit this season.
Also nominated for women’s basketball Player of the Week for Week 6: Tonisha Baker (Campbell), Rachelle Coward (Charleston Southern), Shanika Maddox (Coastal Carolina), Catrina Green (Gardner-Webb), Avery Warley (Liberty), Dria David (Presbyterian College), Victoria Hamilton (Radford) and Dequesha McClanahan (Winthrop).
Also nominated for women’s basketball Freshman of the Week for Week 6: Catherine Kearney (Liberty), Noelle Carter (Presbyterian College) and Shonese Jones (UNC Asheville).
