ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s basketball team goes for its third straight win on Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs host USC Upstate at Kimmel Arena starting at 2 p.m.

Saturday’s game can be heard on WPEK Radio (880-AM) with the pre-game show starting at 1:55 p.m. The game can also be seen for free at the Big South Digital Network under the multimedia tag at uncabulldogs.com.

Asheville (4-3) has won two straight after opening Big South Conference play with a 61-45 victory at Charleston Southern Monday night. The win gave the Bulldogs their first road victory in more than two years and first league win since 2012. Asheville’s defense was the story in the win as it held the Lady Bucs to 25 points below their season average.

USC Upstate is 3-5 on the season but played a tough non-conference road schedule with losses at Duke, High Point, Indiana and George Washington. The Spartans have won the last two meetings with the Bulldogs, including a 54-52 decision last year when Asheville led by 14 in the first half.

“We are glad to be home after our first road win at Charleston Southern Monday night. This game will be in the middle of our exam week and will hopefully serve as a nice study break for the students and other student-athletes on campus,” stated second year coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick. “USC Upstate has high-quality depth on its roster and plays a similar style of basketball with up tempo aggressive offense and defense. We are looking forward to an exciting game against a talented squad and hope that everyone will take some time on Saturday to come out and see the ladies compete.”

Junior guard Brittany Gwyn continues to lead the Bulldogs in scoring with an 11.6 average. Junior guard Shonese Jones is next with a 10.0 per game mark. Junior forward Jeannie Buckner tops the club in rebounding with a 6.6 mark. Sophomore forward Leah Wormack scored 16 points in the CSU win off the bench.

USC Upstate enters Saturday’s game with a 3-5 record. Senior center Brittany Starling is one of the top players in the Atlantic Sun. She’s averaging 11.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. In addition, Starling is shooting .500 (34-of-68) from the field.  Junior guard Sharmayne Edwards averages 10.3 points per game.

The Bulldogs play next at Campbell on Dec. 11 before returning home to face MEAC power North Carolina A&T on Dec. 17.
