ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Shonese Jones scored 17 points, while Leah Wormack added 14 as UNC Asheville rolled to a 73-48 Big South Conference victory over Charleston Southern Sunday afternoon at Kimmel Arena.

Brittany Gwyn chipped in 12 points, while Jeannie Buckner grabbed 10 rebounds for the Blue & White.

Charleston Southern (8-12, 4-7 BSC) was led by D.J. Fowler with 13 points. Erin Bratcher finished with 11 points.

Asheville shot .463 (25-of-54) from the field for the contest and .947 (18-of-19) from the free throw line. The Lady Bucs had a miserable day shooting as they shot just .243 (17-of-70) from the field and .190 (4-of-21) from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs (9-11, 6-5 BSC) took charge of the game right away as the home team scored the first 12 points of the game. CSU missed its first seven field goal attempts before Rochelle Brophy scored for the Lady Bucs.

Asheville used the inside scoring of Wormack and the outside shooting of Jones to build a 34-7 lead at the 6:21 mark on a lay-up from Love. Jones had 15 points in the opening half, while Wormack tallied 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 shooting from the line.

The Lady Bucs regrouped and got 11 points from Fowler to close to 38-19 at intermission.

Asheville outscored the visitors, 25-6 on points in the paint. CSU shot an ice-cold .222 (8-of-36) from the field in the opening half. The Bulldogs were above 60 percent for much of the half before settling for .481 (15-of-31).

CSU’s full-court pressure defense forced 13 Asheville turnovers in the second half. The Lady Bucs closed to 14 at 46-32 on a lay-up from Alyssa Mann at the 10:46 mark.

But Asheville quickly responded with a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to rebuild the lead to 56-34. The home team picked up points from five different players in the run.

The Bulldogs led by as much as 27 points before settling for the 25-point win. It was the biggest margin of win for Asheville in a Big South game dating back to the 2006-07 season.

The Blue & White held a 42-16 advantage on points in the paint and outscored CSU 18-0 on fast-break points.

UNC Asheville begins a three-game Big South Conference road swing on Thursday night when the Bulldogs play at Presbyterian College starting at 7 p.m. Charleston Southern hosts Winthrop on Thursday, also at 7 p.m.
