ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- On Saturday afternoon at the Justice Center on the campus of UNC Asheville the women’s basketball team will host Big South Conference foe Charleston Southern in a rematch from a game earlier this season, an 85-74 victory for the Buccaneers over the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs are currently 10-14 on the year and sit at 3-8 in the Big South. Senior guard Kendall Shepard leads the team and is second in the league with a 14.8 points per game average. Fellow senior Lindsey Montgomery (12.8 ppg) is in sixth place in the conference giving Asheville two players in the top 10 in scoring.
Currently Shepard needs just 15 points to reach 1,000 for her career while Montgomery is sitting at 942.
CSU enters the game with a record of 10-13 overall and a 4-6 mark in conference play. The Buccaneers are led on offense by Katie Tull, who also leads the league in points per game, averaging 15.7 per contest. The Bucs also boast the conference’s fourth leading scorer, Kelsey Wasmer (13.9 ppg)
Asheville is coming off of a tough loss against Gardner-Webb on Monday evening, a game that came down to a last-second three-point attempt. The Bulldogs had a shot to send the game to overtime but GWU survived for a 68-65 win.
The Buccaneers dropped a 68-54 decision to High Point this past Saturday. Tull scored game-high 19 points for CSU in defeat.
The matchup with the Buccaneers will be game two of a doubleheader with the UNC Asheville men’s basketball team. The men will host non-conference opponent Northeastern at 2 p.m. as a part of ESPN’s Bracketbusters presented by Sears. Tip-off between the Bucs and Bulldogs is set for 4:30 p.m.
