ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- For four seniors on the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team Monday evening’s Big South Conference match up with Coastal Carolina will be their final appearance at home in the Justice Center, as Lindsey Montgomery, Chioma Okoli, Kendall Shepard and Dana Wagner will bid farewell to the Bulldog faithful.
Asheville (10-15, 3-9 BSC) honor all four before the game with the Chanticleers, who enter the contest with an overall record of 9-15 and a mark of 3-9 in conference play. The Bulldogs defeated Coastal, 65-53, on Jan. 15 at Kimbel Arena on the campus of the Chanticleers.
Four Bulldogs scored in double figures in that contest, with Montgomery and sophomore Kelli Riles earning double-doubles.
The Bulldogs are coming off of a 98-79 defeat at the hands of Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon. The Buccaneers set a new Big South record for three-pointers in the game, connecting on 18-of-36 attempts from behind the arc.
Montgomery scored 20 points in the contest to lead the Bulldogs with Lindsey Thompson scoring 17 and Shepard scoring 12. The 12 points by Shepard leaves her three points shy of hitting 1,000 for her career. Montgomery is also close to getting reaching that milestone, as she stands at 962 points.
Coastal Carolina fell to conference opponent Gardner-Webb 58-36 on Saturday in Boiling Springs, N.C. The Chanticleers shot 25.5 percent in the game and were out-rebounded 40-27 by the Runnin’ Bulldogs. The 36 points in the game by Coastal tied a season-low point output by the Chanticleers.
Tip off is set for 7 p.m. between the two teams, as the countdown to the final regular season game in the Justice Center will go from three to two.
