Bulldogs Hit The Road To Take On League-Leading Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va.  – The UNC Asheville women’s basketball team will close out the regular season on the road this weekend beginning with Big South Conference frontrunner Liberty University on Friday evening at 7 p.m. as the Bulldogs will look to avenge a 61-44 win by the Lady Flames at the Justice Center on Jan. 10.

The Bulldogs have won two consecutive conference games and have moved into a tie with Winthrop for sixth place in league standings. Asheville is currently 12-15 overall with a 5-9 mark in the Big South. The Blue & White is coming off of a 66-61 victory over the Lady Eagles on Monday evening at the Winthrop Coliseum.

The Lady Flames will welcome Asheville to the Vines Center as they look to solidify the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. Liberty is coming off of a 54-51 loss to Charleston Southern at the Buccaneer Fieldhouse. The Lady Flames were down by as much as 17 at one point in the contest and rallied to cut the lead to three points, but the Lady Bucs were able to hold on for the win.

In the last meeting between the two teams Liberty went on a 19-2 run to start the second as the Lady Flames went on to defeat UNC Asheville 61-44 at Justice Center. The Lady Flames were led by Avery Warley with a double-double as she scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Liberty trailed 29-27 at halftime but scored the fi rst 10 points of the second half to race to a 37-29 lead. The visitors outscored the Bulldogs 34-15 in the second half.

GAME NOTES

1,000 POINT CLUB:  Against Coastal Carolina on Feb. 21 Kendall Shepard became the 13th player in school history to reach 1,000 points for her career. She currently stands at 1,033 in four seasons with the Blue & White. Fellow senior Lindsey Montgomery is currently sitting at 991 points for her career, nine points shy of becoming the 14th player for Asheville to reach 1,000 in a career. Also if Montgomery hits 1,000 for her career, she will be the fifth Bulldog this season to reach that mark this season, with Matt Dickey, J.P. Primm and John Williams reaching 1,000 points each on the men’s side.

RECORD SETTERS:  In UNC Asheville’s game against Radford on Feb. 5 Kelli Riles set the school’s NCAA Division I record for rebounds in a game. In addition, Grace Blaylock has tied her own school record for 3-pointers in a game twice on the season. She hit six against Mercer on Dec. 22 and Longwood on Feb. 8.

MISC:  The win against Coastal on Feb. 21 was the first and only home conference win of the season for Asheville ... The Bulldogs have won (12) four more games than it did all of last season ... Four players for the Bulldogs are averaging 10 or more ppg ...  Asheville leads the league in scoring offense (68.8 ppg) and free throw percentage (70.2).
