Second-Half Surge Leads Charleston Southern Past UNC Asheville

CHARLESTON, S.C.  - After entering the half trailing 45-39 the Charleston Southern Lady Bucs outscored UNC Asheville 49-25 in the second half en route to an 88-70 Big South Conference victory over the visiting Bulldogs, as CSU got a game-high 26 points from Rachelle Coward on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Field House.

Shonese Jones led the Bulldogs in scoring with 18, followed closely by fellow underclassman Leah Wormack who posted 17. Tacey Trammel scored 10 for the Blue & White while Kelli Riles pulled down 12 rebounds.

Asheville drops to 7-14 overall with a 3-7 mark in Big South play, while CSU improves to 13-8 and 6-4 in the league. The Bulldogs also fall to 0-10 on the road this season.

Coward was just one of five Lady Bucs who posted double figures, as Anicia Dotson scored 15, Shay Jones scored 12, Erin Bratcher posted 11 and Shambreka Jones scored 11 as well. Shambreka Jones finished the day with a double-double, posting a team-high 10 boards in the contest.

The Lady Bucs improve to 9-2 at home overall, and 5-1 in Big South games.

Asheville took a 45-39 lead into the break on the strength of 13 points by Shonese Jones, while Tacey Trammel chipped in nine off the bench. The Bulldogs shot 44 percent from the floor in the first half, connecting on 5-of-9 treys in the frame.

Charleston Southern's Coward also posted 13 first half points, with Shay Jones scoring seven.

The second half saw the Lady Bucs come out shooting, starting the frame on a 17-4 run to lead 56-49 with just under 15 minutes remaining. CSU pushed its lead to as much as 21 with 8:25 to go, as the Bulldogs trailed 76-55.

Asheville would pull to within 12 with 4:22 to go on a Gentry Manley jumper to cut the lead to 77-65, but Charleston would stymie the Bulldogs' momentum and finish the game on an 11-5 run.

Asheville will be back in action on Monday evening, when the Bulldogs travel to Conway, S.C., to take on the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. between the two Big South foes, with the Blue & White looking to sweep the season series with Coastal.
