BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s basketball team fell to Big South Conference opponent Gardner-Webb on Saturday evening, 69-52, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs avenged a loss to the Blue & White earlier this season.
Asheville falls to 7-18 overall with a 3-11 mark in Big South play while GWU improves to 3-21 on the year and 2-12 in the league. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also move to one game behind Asheville for the final spot in the 2012 Advance Auto Parts Big South Tournament.
The Bulldogs got a team-high 14 points from freshman guard Shonese Jones, with fellow underclassman Leah Wormack posting 11. Senior guard Lindsey Thompson pulled down 10 rebounds for Asheville and Grace Blaylock tallied three assists.
GWU was led offensively by Jasmine Dale, who posted 20 points on the night. Dale connected on five 3-pointers and also tallied three steals in the game. Catrina Green scored 17 and Brianna Dillard scored 10 for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, and Kiki Smith tallied seven assists in 29 minutes of action.
In the first half the Bulldogs struggled against the full-court press of GWU, turning the ball over eight times. Asheville trailed by as much as 17 with 9:28 to go in the frame, but was able to cut the lead to 10 heading into the break at 35-25.
In the second half the Bulldogs pulled to within six of GWU on a Jones’ jumper to pull within 35-29 with 17:38 to go. However, Asheville could not keep up the momentum as the Runnin’ Bulldogs extended their lead back to double digits, eventually winning by 17.
UNC Asheville will be back in action next Saturday when the Bulldogs will hit the road to take on Big South foe Radford at 3 p.m. The Highlanders won the first contest of the season between the two, earning a 72-62 victory over the Blue & White at Kimmel Arena.
