ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s basketball team hosts Big South Conference leader Winthrop this evening at Kimmel Arena starting at 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs (5-8, 2-2) BSC are coming off a hard-fought 54-47 win over league Presbyterian College Monday night. Asheville trailed by three with 10 minutes left but fought back to earn its second league win of the year. The Bulldogs were led by freshman guard Tianna Knuckles career-high 21 points.


Winthrop will present a real challenge to the Bulldogs tonight. The Lady Eagles (8-3, 3-0 BSC) have been playing very good this year and are definitely one of the top teams in the Big South this year. Winthrop's 3-0 league start is its best in school history. They downed Charleston Southern 69-49 Monday night.


The Eagles are led by senior guard Dequesha McClanhan, the Big South’s Preseason Player of the Year. She’s off to a great start this year with a 19.0 scoring average plus she’s averaging 7.2 rebounds per game. Sophomore center Schaquilla Nunn is one of the best post players in the league. Nunn in averaging a double-double with a 13.2 scoring average and 11.5 rebounding mark.


Brittany Gwyn continues to lead Asheville in scoring with a 10.0 average. Knuckles is averaging 9.7 points per game and has scored in double figures in four of the last five games. Junior forward Jeannie Buckner tops the Bulldogs on the boards with a 5.3 mark. Paige Love leads Asheville in assists with 35.


Winthrop has won the last four meetings between the teams and has not lost a regular-season game in Asheville since February, 2007. The Lady Eagles have won their six games in Asheville, including two at Kimmel Arena. Last season, Winthrop edged the Bulldogs 65-59 at Kimmel Arena before winning easily in Rock Hill, 100-56.


Tonight’s game ends a three-game homestand for the Blue & White. The Bulldogs are on the road next week at Longwood (Jan. 9) and Radford (Jan. 11). Asheville’s next home game at Kimmel Arena is on Jan 16 against High Point.




Asheville tops the Big South Conference in defensive scoring in league games as the Bulldogs have only allowed league opponents to score 53.2 points per game. They also lead in field goal percentage defense as opponents have shot just .317 from the field in four BSC games.


The Bulldogs are 4-4 at home this year.


Junior guard Brittany Gwyn continues to lead the Big South Conference in free throw shooting. Gwyn tops the league at .864 (38-of-44). She enters tonight’s game with a streak of 16 straight made free throws. Brittany only missed one free throw the entire month of December and was 19-of-20 from the charity stripe in the final month of the year.


Asheville tied a season-high with nine 3-pointers made on Monday night vs. PC.


The Bulldogs are third in the Big South in free throw percentage at .714.
