ROCK HILL, S.C. – In the final regular season game of the 2012-13 season the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team fell to Big South Conference foe Winthrop, 100-56, on Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.

“We didn’t play the type of basketball we’re capable playing of today,” said Asheville head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick. “Winthrop is one of the hottest teams in the league right now, and we didn’t match their intensity from the start.”

Winthrop (20-10, 14-4 BSC) was celebrating senior day, and their lone senior went out in style. Diana Choibekova led all players with 33 points, a season-high for the guard. Fellow backcourt player Dequesha McClanahan added 31 to the Lady Eagles’ total, and Schaquilla Nunn posted a double-double, scoring 10 and pulling down 12 rebounds.

UNC Asheville falls to 2-27 on the season, with a 0-18 mark in Big South Conference play.

The Bulldogs were led offensively by senior forward Gentry Manley, who scored a career-high 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Blue & White. Senior Grace Blaylock scored 11 points for the Bulldogs, while dishing out five assists.

Asheville struggled offensively early, as the Lady Eagles ran out to a 29-13 lead over the first 10 minutes of the contest, with Choibekova scoring 16 points during that span. Eventually Winthrop took a 50-26 lead into the half, converting eight 3-pointers in the frame.

The second half saw the Lady Eagles push their lead to 69-33 with 13:55 to go, and pushed their lead throughout the rest of the contest, eventually winning 100-56.

The Bulldogs will take part in the 2013 Big South Conference Basketball Championship next week, and will be the No. 11 seed in the tournament. They will take on the No. 6 seed Radford on Wednesday, March 6. Opening tip is set for 2 p.m. at the HTC Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
