ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Campbell placed three players in double figures as the Lady Camels held off several UNC Asheville comebacks in the second half to record a 61-52 Big South Conference win over the Bulldogs Thursday night at Kimmel Arena.

Asheville (10-18, 7-12 BSC) was led by junior guard Shonese Jones with a game-high 17 points. Jones moved closer to 1,000 career points as she now has 989 points. She needs 11 to become the 14th player in school history to reach 1,000 points.

Campbell (18-10, 13-6 BSC) was led by Ashley James’ 15 points, while Amanda Coffer added 11 points. Roslyn Presley finished with 10 points. Kiera Gaines just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

KJ Weaver of Asheville contributed nine points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

Campbell led 27-22 at intermission and built the lead to 52-32 with 7:18 left on a Summer Leverette jumper. The Bulldogs were ice cold from the field and the Camels used a dominating inside game to steadily build a 20-point lead.

Asheville got back in the game as it went on a 10-0 run, led by seven points from Jones to quickly cut the margin to 52-42.

The Bulldogs had some chances to get even closer by a Jones trey spun out with four minutes left. Campbell was able to get some key stops down the stretch that just wouldn’t allow the home team to get closer.

Asheville was within 55-47 on a tap-in by Weaver at the 1:11 mark. But the Camels hit three free throws and got two big offensive rebounds off missed free throws to preserve the lead.

In the first half, Campbell scored eight straight points to break at 14-14 tie and take a t 22-14 lead. Cofer had six points during the run.

The Bulldogs made a late run and got two free throws from Jones at the 11-second mark to close to 27-22 at halftime.

Asheville shot just 31 percent (18-of-55) from the field and 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from beyond the arc. Campbell outscored the Bulldogs 36-20 in the paint.
