CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina senior guard Angelica Henry scored a career-high 32 points including converting 14-of-18 free throws, as the Chanticleers earned a 75-65 victory over the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team on Thursday evening at the HTC Center.

Sophomore guard and reigning Big South Player of the Week tallied 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead all Bulldogs, earning her second career double-double in the setback. Shonese Jones scored 15 for the Blue & White while Tianna Knuckles posted 12.

With the setback Asheville falls to 8-11 and 5-5 in the Big South while Coastal improves to 10-9 overall and 6-4 in league play.

Alexx Puckett scored 13 for the Chants with teammate AJ Jordan chipping in 10, but Henry was the star of the show for Coastal on the evening. In addition to her 32 points, she also had 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals in helping lead CCU to the win.

Asheville struggled shooting the ball early on, finishing the contest shooting 32.8 percent on 22-of-67 from the floor. The Bulldogs also did not hit a 3-point attempt until 34 seconds left in the contest after averaging 5.7 treys per contest in league play.

Coastal Carolina was also 22-of-34 from the free throw line, while the Bulldogs were 19-of-23.

The first half saw the Chants run out to a 9-2 lead before Shonese Jones was able to put in the Bulldogs’ second basket of the game to cut the lead to five points with just over 14 minutes remaining. A Tianna Knuckels jumper at the 10:19 mark gave Asheville its first lead at 12-11, but Coastal was able to fight back and retake the lead at 17-16 at the 8:02 mark when Alexx Puckett hit a jumper from just inside the 3-point arc.

The Bulldogs tied the game at 22 points apiece with 4:17 remaining after KJ Weaver’s putback layup off of a missed jumper. However, the Chanticleers finished the frame on an 8-3 run to take a 30-25 lead into halftime.

Asheville shot the ball well coming out of the break, pulling to within 35-33 with 18:05 remaining on a Knuckles layup. Coastal would hold onto the lead but the Bulldogs would pull to within a point at 42-41 with 12:07 left in the frame, as Paige Love scored two layups in 30 seconds to cut into the Coastal lead.

Coastal would then go on a 15-4 run over the next four minutes to take a 57-45, capped off by an AJ Jordan jumper from just inside the 3-point arc.

The Chants would keep the Bulldogs at arm’s length the rest of the way, as the Blue & White was able to cut the lead to 71-65 with 17 seconds remaining, but Coastal would convert four consecutive free throws to ice the game.

UNC Asheville will play a rare Sunday contest this weekend, hosting Big South foe Charleston Southern at Kimmel Arena at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs defeated the Lady Bucs 61-46 in Charleston, S.C., on Dec. 2 for their first conference victory of the season.
