ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team heads to Winthrop Monday evening to being a three-game road swing to complete the regular season starting at 7 p.m. Monday's game will be broadcast on ESPN Radio (1310-AM) starting with the pre-game show at 6:30 p.m. The game will also be video-streamed and can be seen for a small fee at www.uncabulldogs.com.
Asheville (11-15, 4-9 BSC) has not played in a week after rallying past Coastal Carolina 67-64 behind 22 points from Kendall Shepard. The Bulldogs trailed by 10 points with eight minutes left but would not be denied on Senior Night to pick up their first and only conference home win of the year.
"We're improved from last year but we've been inconsistent," stated Bulldog coach Betsy Blose. "However, I was proud of our team for coming back like we did against Coastal Carolina. We could have easily folded but we found a way to win. Hopefully, that kind of win will give us some momentum in the last week of the season."
The Bulldogs face a Winthrop (12-14, 5-8 BSC) team that has lost two straight but rallied past Asheville on Jan. 22 at Justice Center, 71-64. Freshman Dequesha McClanahan scored 26 points to lead the Lady Eagles back from 15 points down in the first half.
"We played very well in the first half against Winthrop but then they did a great job shutting us down in the second half on offense," commented Blose. "We're going to have to play for 40 minutes against them Monday night."
Kendall Shepard continues to lead the Bulldogs in scoring with a 14.8 average. She's second in the league in scoring. Lindsey Montgomery is averaging 13.2 points per game and is shooting 47 percent from the field.
McClanahan leads Winthrop in scoring with a 12.0 scoring average.
